Choosing Safe Toys For Your Kids

Every time I hear that there is an additional toy recall, I do believe to myself – you must be kidding! How can these dangerous toys even arrive at the shelves and within reach of our own curious children in the first place? Did the makers realize they were possibly damaging? Exist quality control measures to make sure this will not occur?

I personally know a sweet lady that is a mom of three little girls. After I was visiting together with her 1 day, I noticed pictures of the little boy around the walls and asked who it absolutely was. She explained to me it absolutely was her son who had died at age three every time a toy got stuck within his throat. His attempts were fruitless, and the child succumbed, though his father had tried desperately to remove the lodged toy. I found myself horrified and may only imagine just how much both experienced this sad experience.

It is difficult to watch our children every minute, but we can make every attempt to remove any toys that could do harm from those that they play with every day. Your children also may receive toys as presents from well-meaning family friends and members for birthdays and holidays. Just how do you be sure that the toys you possess in your home are safe for your children?

It is good to be aware of the CPSC US Consumer Product Safety Commission Homepage, which is where you can look to see if a particular toy has been recalled. You can also subscribe to the RSS feed so it will be possible to view the latest recalls. You can also report it on this great site to help others if you know of any incident related to a toy injuring a child.

Most recently the CPSC announced the recall of toy dark gun play sets that were sold in the Family Dollar Stores. Two children, aged 9 and 10 (both boys) place the soft darts to their mouths and accidentally inhaled them into their throats. They were unable to get the darts removed and the children died of asphyxiation, because of the suction cups. Children of all ages can be harmed if they are not careful with toys.

Another suggestion is to pay attention to age recommendations on toys. They are placed on the packages for a reason. Toys with small or removable parts can cause injuries or asphyxiation, even though you may think your child is old enough to play with a toy that is made for an older child. Some older children also still like to put things with their mouths, ears and nose, so you happen to be best judge to be aware what is appropriate on their behalf.
